Abu Dhabi

An orderly island capital built on culture, oil, and sea.

introduction

Overview

Abu Dhabi spreads across coastal islands connected by multi-lane highways rather than a single walkable centre. Taxis and public buses carry you between quiet modern districts, monumental stone architecture, and wide waterfronts. Expect a deliberate, orderly pace that contrasts sharply with neighbouring Dubai.

Zayed International Airport terminal

Terminal A centralises all passenger flights. The A1 bus connects the terminal to downtown Abu Dhabi every 30 minutes.

UNESCO World Heritage site nearby

Al Ain, located ninety minutes inland within the emirate, contains the country's only UNESCO World Heritage property.

Hafilat smart card for public buses

Abu Dhabi buses do not accept cash fares. Purchase a Hafilat smart card at airport vending machines before boarding.

food

Emirati flavours and Mina Zayed catches

Abu Dhabi's food scene branches into two distinct realms: high-end hotel restaurants and neighbourhood cafeterias. Traditional Emirati cuisine centers on slow-cooked spiced rice dishes like machboos and hearty wheat porridge like harees. Head down to Mina Zayed port to pick fresh fish at the market and have adjacent stalls cook it on the spot.

  • Mina Zayed Fish Market

Select raw fish directly from market stalls and take it across the alley to be grilled with local spices for a small fee.

  • Traditional Karak Tea

Small cafeterias across Al Danah serve strong, boiled black tea brewed with evaporated milk and cardamom for AED 2 per cup.

  • Luqaimat for Dessert

These fried dough balls tossed in date syrup and sesame seeds appear at traditional bakeries, best eaten fresh and warm.
