Cardiff

Victorian arcades, rugby crowds, and a regenerated bay.

introduction

Overview

Cardiff packs a medieval castle, Victorian shopping arcades, and a national stadium into a compact, walkable core. A two-mile run south along the waterfront brings you to Cardiff Bay, where former coal docks now house government and arts venues. Public transport relies on short-hop commuter rail and city buses, though walking works for almost every central journey. Expect rapid weather shifts and heavy crowds whenever Wales plays rugby at home.

Free national museum entry

Admission to National Museum Cardiff is free under Welsh government funding. You only pay for select temporary special exhibitions.

Rugby matchday closures

Roads around Principality Stadium close five hours before international matches. Central hotels triple their rates and trains run queuing systems.

history

A short history

Cardiff expanded from a modest fort town into the world's primary coal-exporting port within a single century. The Bute family harnessed South Wales Valleys coal mines and constructed deep-water docks in Cardiff Bay during the 19th century. By 1913, Cardiff exported over ten million tons of coal annually, shaping its Victorian architecture and multicultural dock community at Tiger Bay. Decades of industrial decline followed, until major urban renewal began in 1987 with the creation of the Cardiff Bay Development Corporation, and in 1999 Cardiff became the seat of the National Assembly for Wales (renamed Welsh Parliament in 2020).
