Cozumel

Coral reefs, clear drift dives, and island limestone roads.

introduction

Overview

Cozumel is a limestone island sitting twelve miles off Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. You move around by scooter, rental car, or taxi along a single main loop road. Expect world-class drift diving on the west reef and wild ocean waves on the east coast. Life slows down as soon as the afternoon cruise ships depart.

Ferry arrival strategy

Passenger ferries run hourly from Playa del Carmen directly to San Miguel pier. Buy single tickets so you can take whichever company departs first on your return trip.

Mayan sanctuary history

San Gervasio served as the central sanctuary for Ixchel, the Mayan goddess of fertility and moon. Pilgrims crossed from the mainland by canoe over 1,000 years ago.

East coast wind caution

The eastern wild coast has strong undertows and no reef protection. Stick to designated beach spots on the windward side to avoid dangerous currents.

food

Beyond tourist beach clubs

Cozumel cuisine centers on Yucatecan traditions paired with fresh Caribbean seafood. You find slow-roasted pork cooked with achiote paste alongside lionfish speared to protect local coral reefs. Skip tourist places directly opposite cruise docks if you want real island flavor.

  • Cochinita pibil

Eaten strictly for breakfast or early lunch at Mercado Municipal. Vendors run out by 13:00 daily.

  • Lionfish tacos

Order lionfish at local marisquerías like La Pescadería. Eating this invasive species protects native reef fish.

  • Cash for tacos

Small street stalls inland take Mexican pesos only. Credit cards incur high surcharges away from major piers.

history

A sanctuary in the sea

Cozumel was an important pilgrimage site for Mayan women visiting shrines dedicated to Ixchel. Spanish contact in 1518 brought smallpox, which decimated the island's native population. The island was permanently resettled in 1848 during the Caste War of Yucatán, establishing San Miguel de Cozumel as an active town well before modern scuba diving popularised the island in the 1960s.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Sunscreen rules

Only biodegradable sunscreen is legal in marine parks. Wear rashguards instead to avoid chemical run-off.

  • Port closures

Strong winter winds force port captains to close reef diving. Have an inland backup plan for rainy days.

  • ATM locations

Use bank ATMs around the central plaza in San Miguel. Avoid standalone street ATMs near cruise docks.

  • East coast swimming

East coast beaches feature strong rip currents. Swimming is prohibited at most windward stops.

  • Cruise ship schedule

Check daily port schedules online. Town grows quiet after 17:00 when ships leave.
