Heringsdorf

Imperial Baltic beach resort of grand villas and long piers

introduction

Overview

Heringsdorf sits on Usedom island along a continuous twelve-kilometre sandy Baltic seafront shared with neighbouring Ahlbeck, Bansin, and Świnoujście in Poland. The town developed in the nineteenth century as an imperial retreat for wealthy Berliners, leaving behind streets of white stucco masonry villas and continental Europe's longest pier. You move through town either on foot along the paved beach promenade or via the Usedomer Bäderbahn local train line. Expect crisp sea air, quiet pine dunes, and structured resort traditions that charge a daily municipal visitor tax for beach access.

Arrival by train

Usedomer Bäderbahn trains run directly from Züssow station on the mainland into Seebad Heringsdorf station.

Longest pier in Continental Europe

Heringsdorf Pier extends 508 metres over the Baltic Sea with a covered glass pavilion at its end.

Kaiserbäder visitor card trick

Paying your mandatory daily Kurtaxe gives you free local bus rides between Heringsdorf, Bansin, and Ahlbeck.

food

Matjes, Sea Buckthorn, and Baltic Smokehouse Fish

Usedom seafood revolves around smoked fish and pickled herring caught in Baltic waters and coastal lagoons. Local bakeries and seaside cafes feature Sanddorn, a tart sea buckthorn berry harvested along coastal dunes. Fish kiosks along the promenade serve cold Bismarck and Matjes rolls.

  • Fischbrötchen directly from smokehouses

Order a Matjes- or Räucheraal-Brötchen at the Fischbude near Heringsdorf pier instead of sitting down at resort restaurants.

  • Sanddorn specialities

Try sea buckthorn cake or liqueur at promenade cafes, where the berry's high vitamin content is turned into local sweets.

  • Promenade smokehouse hours

Kiosks close early around 18:00 outside July and August, so buy smoked fish for lunch rather than dinner.

history

A short history

Heringsdorf grew from a small fishing hamlet into Prussia's elite seaside resort during the nineteenth century. Aristocrats and artists built elaborate summer residences away from Berlin, giving birth to the distinct Resort Architecture style. Today, Heringsdorf remains linked with neighbouring Ahlbeck and Bansin as the Three Imperial Spas.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Kurtaxe ticket checks

Carry your Kurtaxe card on the beach; marshals perform spot checks along the sand entrances.

  • Wind protection mandatory

Baltic breezes can be chilly even in summer; book a Strandkorb or bring a pop-up beach windbreak.

  • Promenade bike speed limits

Pedestrians have priority on the promenade; cyclists must keep speed under 15 km/h in marked zones.

  • Currency across the border

Świnoujście accepts Euros at most tourist venues, but paying in Polish Złoty card payments gives better rates.

  • Steep paths around Bansin

Coastal cliffs near Bansin involve wooden steps and steep grades not suitable for light strollers.
