Kelowna

Vineyards, lakefront trails, and orchard country in BC.

introduction

Overview

Kelowna sits along Okanagan Lake, surrounded by steep hills and rows of orchards. You move through the city best by car or on a bicycle, as public transit runs on spread-out routes. Summer brings heavy traffic and warm lake waters, while winter shifts the focus to Big White Ski Resort. Expect a town built on wine, local produce, and outdoor activity.

Airport arrival hack

Route 23 bus connects YLW airport to UBC Okanagan station for $2.50. From there, transfer to Route 97 express directly into downtown.

Wine valley distinction

The Okanagan Valley is Canada's second-largest wine region. Over 40 wineries sit within a twenty-minute drive of downtown Kelowna.

Summer traffic window

Crossing the W.R. Bennett Bridge into West Kelowna stalls between 15:00 and 18:00 on weekdays. Schedule winery trips across the lake for mornings.

food

Fruit stands, wine country bistros, and lakefront dining

Kelowna sits in Canada's premier orchard and wine valley. Local menus reflect seasonal harvests from tree fruits in late summer to cool-climate wines year-round. Restaurant kitchens partner directly with nearby farms, meaning menus change frequently throughout the growing season.

  • Wine pairings

Order local Pinot Noir or Riesling with your dinner. Okanagan wineries produce exceptional cool-climate varietals that dominate local wine lists.

  • Fruit stand stops

Buy fresh cherries in July and peaches in August from roadside stalls along Highway 97 or East Kelowna roads. Cash and debit are widely accepted.

  • Dinner reservations

Book vineyard patio tables two to three weeks ahead for summer evenings. Peak dinner hours between 18:30 and 20:30 sell out early.

history

A short history

The Syilx Okanagan Nation lived along these waters for thousands of years before European arrival. Oblate missionaries established the region's first permanent settlement in 1859, planting fruit trees that laid the foundation for the valley's agricultural economy. Rail connections later transformed Kelowna into an orchard trade center, which shifted towards wine production and tourism in the late twentieth century.

  1. 1859

Father Charles Pandosy establishes the first non-indigenous settlement in the Okanagan Valley.

  2. 1958

    First lake bridge

The Okanagan Lake Bridge opens, replacing ferry service and connecting Kelowna to Westbank.

  3. 1990s

    Wine industry pivot

Valley orchards convert acreage to European grape vines, establishing Kelowna as a premium wine zone.
