introduction
Korçë sits on an elevated plateau framed by the Morava mountains in southeastern Albania. You move through the city on foot, drifting between the Ottoman bazaar cobbles and wide French-built boulevards. Expect cold winter snow, summer tavern serenades, and a distinctly slower pace than inland Tirana.
Arrival from Tirana
Furgon minibuses depart Tirana South Station for Korçë every hour. The journey takes three hours and costs 700 ALL.
Iconography collection
The Museum of Medieval Art houses over 7,000 Orthodox icons. It is one of the largest specialized religious art collections in the Balkans.
Sunday lakror timing
Traditional lakror pies take 40 minutes under hot ashes. Order your pie at a tavern the moment you sit down.

Korçë's culinary identity revolves around slow wood fires and grilled meats. The town's staple is lakror, a thin double-crusted pie filled with leeks or spinach and cooked under a heavy metal lid covered in embers, known as a saç. Local taverns grill small spiced skinless sausages called kërnaçe, served with raw onions and cold draught beer.

Traditional acoustic serenades happen live in taverns like Vila Trebicka on Friday and Saturday evenings.
Grill houses sell kërnaçe by weight or per piece. A typical order is 10 to 12 pieces with hot mustard.
history
Founded in the late 15th century by Iljaz Hoxha under Ottoman rule, Korçë developed as an important trade depot between Greece and the Adriatic. In 1887, local educators opened the first secular school teaching in the Albanian language. During World War I, French troops occupied the region and proclaimed the short-lived Autonomous Republic of Korçë, leaving behind French-style architectural influences on city boulevards.
Foundation
Iljaz Hoxha establishes Korçë under Ottoman imperial decree, building the Mirahori Mosque.
First Albanian School
Mësonjëtorja opens, teaching secular courses in written Albanian despite Ottoman censorship.
Autonomous Republic
French military forces govern Korçë for four years during World War I, introducing French town planning.
Brewery established
Birra Korça begins production as Albania's first industrial brewery.
where to stay
Choose your neighbourhood based on how close you want to be to evening noise. The Old Bazaar houses renovated Ottoman inns with character, but tavern music plays late. The boulevard area offers quieter boutique hotels inside early 20th-century villas.
