Kraków

Royal history, socialist planned grids, and walkability.

introduction

Overview

Kraków centers on a medieval grid that survived World War II intact. You move through the city on foot or via a dense tram system. Royal monuments sit at the center, bordered by the former Jewish quarter of Kazimierz and the industrial grid of Podgórze, while Nowa Huta is located about 10 kilometers east of the city center.

Airport train over taxi

The SKA1 train links Balice Airport to Kraków Główny in 20 minutes for 17 PLN. Taxis take twice as long during rush hour.

First UNESCO World Heritage site

Kraków's Old Town entered the original UNESCO list in 1978. Its medieval street grid remains intact.

Book Schindler's Factory early

Schindler's Factory caps daily entry and sells out days ahead. Monday tickets are free but require online booking.

food

Milk bars, zapiekanki, and market bakeries

Kraków's food scene rests on traditional Polish hearty classics and fast street snacks. Milk bars (bar mleczny) serve subsidized staples like pierogi, barszcz, and kotlet schabowy at communal tables. At Plac Nowy in Kazimierz, open-face toasted baguettes known as zapiekanki feed night crowds until early morning.

A short history

Kraków expanded as a trade outpost on the Vistula River before becoming Poland's royal capital in 1038. After royal power moved to Warsaw in 1596, Kraków remained the coronation site for monarchs. During World War II, Nazi forces occupied the city and turned nearby Oświęcim into Auschwitz, though Kraków's physical buildings escaped bombing.
