Kunming

Kunming sits at 1,890 metres elevation on the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. Mild temperatures keep the city green year-round, but low humidity means winter nights drop close to freezing. Metro lines connect the spread-out districts efficiently, while high-speed rail links you onward to Laos and western Yunnan, though the rail route to Vietnam operates on conventional-speed tracks.

Kunming food centers on rice noodles, pickled vegetables, and seasonal mountain fungi. Cross-bridge rice noodles (Guoqiao Mixian) arrive as separate components: boiling hot poultry broth topped with oil, raw meat slices, and noodles mixed at your table. During rainy months from June to September, local markets sell fresh wild mushrooms like matsutake and termite fungi.

Kunming developed as a garrison city for the Nanzhao and Dali kingdoms before integration into Yuan-dynasty China in 1274. Its geography made it the primary gateway between Southwestern China and Southeast Asia. During World War II, the city served as the eastern terminal of the Burma Road and base for the Flying Tigers aviation squad.

Kunming is less expensive than eastern coastal Chinese cities like Shanghai or Shenzhen. Digital payments are universal; cash is accepted but change for 100 CNY notes can be difficult for small vendors to provide.
