Linz

Heavy industry turned digital media capital on the Danube.

introduction

Overview

Linz sits on the Danube midway between Salzburg and Vienna. Steel manufacturing built its 20th-century wealth, but media art and modern architecture drive its current identity. The core is compact and easily traversed on foot or via line 1 and 2 trams. Expect a functional, unpretentious city that trades imperial grandeur for contemporary culture.

Rail over air for speed

Linz Airport (LNZ) has limited direct flights. Express Railjets connecting Vienna Airport to Linz Hauptbahnhof take 1 hour and 40 minutes.

UNESCO City of Media Arts

Linz joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network in 2014. The designation reflects its focus on technology, digital design, and media art.

Linzer Torte and Upper Austrian Tavern Classics

Linz claims the oldest known cake recipe in the world. The Linzer Torte, documented as early as 1653, features shortcrust pastry made with ground nuts and spiced with cinnamon, topped with redcurrant jam and a lattice crust. Traditional bakery Café Jindrak bakes thousands daily across its Linz branches. Beyond sweet pastries, Upper Austrian cuisine centers on hearty tavern food. Linzer Knödel (dumplings filled with smoked meat) and Speckknödel feature heavily on menus along the Danube. Wash them down with Most, a fermented apple and pear cider served cold in glassware or stoneware mugs.

  • Taste the original recipe

Café Jindrak on Herrenstraße is the standard-bearer for Linzer Torte. Order a slice with black coffee.

  • Most heuriger hours

Traditional cider houses (Mostheurige) operate on seasonal schedules. Check openings before walking out to rural suburbs.

  • Bakeries accept cards

Unlike small rural Austrian inns, city bakeries like Jindrak and Honeder process card payments without minimums.

history

A short history

Linz originated as the Roman fort Lentia along the northern border of the empire. By the 15th century, Holy Roman Emperor Friedrich III made Linz his imperial residence, turning the city into an administrative stronghold. Industrialization arrived in the late 19th century, cementing Linz as a manufacturing hub. After steel production expanded mid-century, the city intentionally shifted focus toward culture and technology in the 1970s, founding the Ars Electronica Festival and building world-class museums along the river.
