Nafplio

Venetian fortresses, marble squares, and Peloponnesian sea views.

food

Peloponnesian pasta and orange groves

Nafplio cuisine combines Peloponnesian farm produce with seafood from the Argolic Gulf. Local menus highlight handmade gogges pasta, rolled by hand and smothered in browned butter and grated mizithra cheese. Citrus orchards surround the Argolida plain, supplying fresh orange marinades for local pork dishes.

  • Gogges pasta

Order this fresh hand-rolled shell pasta at local tavernas like O Noulis on Staikopoulou street.

  • Orange groves

Argolida citrus infuses local cakes like portokalopita and syrups used in gelato along Bouboulinas street.

  • Dinner timing

Kitchens open around 19:30, but local diners rarely sit before 21:30. Reservations matter on Friday and Saturday nights.

history

A short history

Nafplio developed as a fortified port controlled successively by Byzantines, Venetians, and Ottomans. After the Greek War of Independence, the city served as the first capital of the modern Greek state from 1827 to 1834. The assassination of Governor Ioannis Kapodistrias here in 1831 shifted the national capital to Athens shortly after.

  1. 1686

    Venetian Expansion

Venetians take control and build the massive Palamidi Fortress to protect the strategic Argolic port.

  2. 1822

    Ottoman Surrender

Greek forces liberate the Palamidi fortress after a year-long siege, securing the city for the revolution.

  3. 1831

    Kapodistrias Assassinated

Governor Kapodistrias is assassinated outside the Church of Saint Spyridon, triggering political realignment.
