introduction
Nice operates on a double identity forged by history: it belonged to the House of Savoy until 1860, leaving a distinct Italian soul beneath French civic infrastructure. The city curves along the Baie des Anges, where grey pebble beaches meet dense nineteenth-century grid plans and narrow medieval alleyways. You navigate mostly on foot or via a simple three-line tramway that links the airport directly to the centre. Expect strong sun, strict dining hours, and a city where cultural life stays active year-round rather than closing after summer.
UNESCO recognition
UNESCO inscribed Nice in 2021 as the resort city of the Riviera, citing its winter tourism architecture.
Beach reality
Nice beaches consist of smooth grey stones, not sand. Buy rubber sea shoes at local shops for €10.

اسأل Parleyfood
Nissart cuisine is distinct from classical French cooking. It shares a foundation with Ligurian cooking, relying on olive oil, garlic, Swiss chard, and small olives rather than butter or cream. Authentic traditional dishes carry the official Cuisine Nissarde label displayed on restaurant windows.Socca leads local street food: a wood-fired chickpea flour pancake crisp on the edges and soft inside. Eat it hot with black pepper straight from paper cones while standing at street stalls.

Establishments bearing the official wooden plaque guarantee traditional recipes for pissaladière and daube niçoise.
Restaurants lining Cours Saleya charge premium prices for average food. Walk two blocks inland for better quality.
history
Nice began as Nikaia, founded by Phocaean Greeks around 350 BC. Its location made it a contested Mediterranean border point between Savoyard rulers and French armies for centuries. The city only joined France in 1860 following the Treaty of Turin. English aristocrats made it their preferred winter retreat in the nineteenth century, establishing the seafront urban design visible today.
Greek Settlement
Phocaean Greeks establish Nikaia as a trading post above the bay.
Dedication to Savoy
Nice places itself under Savoyard protection, cutting political ties with Provence.
Annexation by France
The Treaty of Turin officially incorporates Nice into the French state.
UNESCO World Heritage
Nice gains UNESCO recognition as the archetypal Riviera winter resort town.
where to stay
Choose your base by terrain and transit access. Vieux Nice places you inside the atmospheric historic quarter, but narrow streets prevent taxi drops at hotel doors. Le Port offers quiet evenings and direct tram links to the airport. Carré d'Or gives proximity to the beach and high-end shopping.
