Yamanouchi

Thermal baths, mountain slopes, and wild macaques.

introduction

Overview

Yamanouchi sits in the mountains of Nagano Prefecture, built around hot springs and high peaks. You move between its valley villages on the Nagano Electric Railway and local feeder buses. Expect sulfur-scented streets, steep winter ski runs, and wild monkeys soaking in volcanic pools.

Arrival trick

Buy the Nagaden Snow Monkey Pass at Nagano Station. It covers train travel, local feeder buses, and entrance to Jigokudani.

UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

Shiga Kogen was designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1980. The park protects alpine wetlands and ancient coniferous forests.

Onsen access key

Staying overnight in Shibu Onsen gets you a master key to all nine public bathhouses. Day visitors can only access bath number nine.

food

Buckwheat, alpine trout, and local orchards

Yamanouchi relies on Nagano buckwheat and high-altitude mountain produce. Cold spring water gives local Shinshu soba its firm texture. Evening meals at traditional ryokan feature local river trout, often skewered and salt-grilled over charcoal.

practicalities

Good to know

  • Winter trail footwear

The forest trail to Jigokudani freezes solid in winter. Rent clip-on ice cleats at the trail head.

  • Carry local cash

Small family ryokan and bath stamp stands do not accept electronic payments.

  • Bathhouse etiquette

Wash thoroughly at water taps before entering communal thermal bath water.

  • Collect bath stamps

Buy a small hand towel at your ryokan to collect ink stamps outside each bathhouse.

  • Check highway status

Volcanic alerts around Mount Kusatsu-Shirane can temporarily close Route 292.
