This family‑run traditional Japanese house is beautiful, and the owners are wonderfully friendly and warm. Food is abundant, with amazing dinners and breakfasts; drinks can be ordered extra at very reasonable prices. Fresh fish is caught live from a traditional fish tub on site and cooked immediately. Sitting around the fire for a wild boar hot pot meal was also an amazing experience. Each morning, we received a token gift—paper fans, a crochet turtle charm for a long life—when we left the house. On the day we checked out, because we left early, the owner prepared rice balls for us to take away as breakfast. One evening, we were treated to a traditional Japanese interactive special performance, which was great fun. The onsen is great and just the right size for us; it’s basic, not too fancy or commercialised. The owner even opened the onsen out‑of‑hours for us to enjoy. We were given traditional robes to wear, which felt very comfortable. There are no Western beds; we had to lay the mattresses on the floor ourselves and put our own bed sheets, which was good because we could choose where to lay them. The location is very rural and much further outside Kanazawa, so it was wonderful to experience something different outside the main cities. An infrequent bus at the nearby town, Yuwaku, is about 7 minutes away, and the owner kindly drove us to and from the bus stop to travel to and from Kanazawa, the main town about 45 to 60 minutes away. The owners speak limited English, enough for basic communication, and when needed we used a translation app to communicate. There is free WiFi on site, and we also had good reception using our Esim data. The warmth of the owners was wonderfully memorable. This is not to do with the house or its host. We are including this here so others can be more prepared should they wish to hire a car: Given the rural location, we planned to hire a car, but it turned out that our international driving licence was not applicable. If you plan to hire a car in Japan, then the international driving licence must adhere to the 1949 convention. Please be aware. Otherwise, thank you to the host for picking us up from, and driving us to, the nearby town to catch the bus.

Everything was amazing. The accommodations were authentic Japanese, set in a very beautiful and quiet location that was very peaceful. The family that runs it were so sweet and accommodating. Food was exceptional, very authentic Japanese and delicious. The onsen was beautiful and very relaxing. The room was huge and accommodated five of us comfortably. This was definitely a highlight of our trip!
