Mike and Lynley were extraordinary hosts: warm, kind and extremely knowledgeable; they went out of their way for us. Hopewell is about 30 minutes by boat (water taxi) from Havelock, in a stunning remote corner of the Pelorus Sound, and it is peaceful and utterly beautiful. There are heaps of activities on offer, as well as walks and the use of a wonderful kitchen / common room with a roaring fire. Our cabin – with its own private veranda – looked out over the Sound, a sight especially striking first thing in the morning. Our afternoon sail with Phil from Sounds by Sail was another unforgettable experience. A truly magical stay at Hopewell. We will return! Everything was perfect!

The surroundings were stunning, the hosts exceptionally kind and generous, there were watercraft, and the communal feel with other guests in the shared kitchen/living area was great. Nothing.

I was blown away by the beautiful, peaceful setting and the wide array of activities available if you want to get involved. Mike and Lynlee were absolutely wonderful hosts, always ready to answer any questions I had.

“Wonderful place in a stunning location”

This was our second visit to Hopewell Lodge and we’re still head over heels for it. Mike and Lynley have built a place that feels like home, with a kindness and openness you rarely find elsewhere. The beds and linens are top‑quality, and the shared kitchen is fully equipped; since there are no nearby shops or restaurants, you either bring your own supplies or rely on their fresh pizza (or you can have a supermarket deliver). There’s a ton of entertainment options included in the price, or you can just kick back and enjoy the surroundings. Some reviews claim driving there is a nightmare, but we found it perfectly fine. Yes, the drive around Kenepuru Sound takes a couple of hours and the road is twisty, yet it’s gorgeous. Only a few short gravel stretches exist; the road is paved for 90 % of the way and usually wide enough for two cars. The current roadworks (as of early 26) might require a bit of planning, but it’s nothing to fret about. If you don’t want to drive, boat transfers are available. Once you get there, it’s truly amazing – a must‑visit spot for us.

The bay where you can swim and row is adorable, and the pizza is especially delicious. The transport is a little inconvenient.
