We were extremely disappointed when our reservation was cancelled without notice. We booked two rooms at The Saddle Inn in Fulford, York, on 3 May 2026 and received a confirmation email for the evening of Saturday, 10 October 2026. We were travelling from Edinburgh to attend my mother‑in‑law’s 80th birthday celebrations. After driving about 200 miles and dealing with heavy traffic because of the horse racing at Knavesmire, we arrived at the Inn around 2 pm, expecting our rooms to be ready. Instead the barman told us that all rooms were occupied and that our reservation had apparently been cancelled. He said we should have received an email, but we had not. Arriving after such a long trip for a special family event and finding no accommodation was extremely upsetting and totally unacceptable. We can only guess why this happened, but with the major horse racing event in York that weekend it seemed likely the rooms were sold to other guests at a higher rate. Thankfully my wife went to the neighbouring Pavilion, where the receptionist saw how distressed she was. They had an apartment available, though housekeeping needed to prepare it for us. We’re very grateful for their help in an incredibly stressful situation. The Pavilion saved the day, but The Saddle Inn left us in an avoidable predicament. We had booked months in advance and received written confirmation. We deserved to be informed beforehand if our booking could not be honoured, rather than discovering the issue on arrival. This was a very poor experience, especially given the importance of the occasion and the distance we travelled.
