I got to stay in a building that’s 300 years old, and I could actually see and touch the construction of the storehouse and the main house up close. The owner even showed me where to eat dinner and the hot spring, and he made a reservation for me at the dinner place.

The renovated storehouse on the grounds of a 1600s‑era traditional house is a two‑story guest house: the first floor has a surprisingly large number of books lined up in a bookshelf and a living room, while the second floor is a tatami room with three futons and a bathroom with a washbasin. The main house on the same property has a kitchen and a shower room, so you can bring your own ingredients and cook. A microwave, toaster, fridge, dishes and pots are all provided. Because the restaurant I wanted to go to was closed, I bought food at a convenience store, used the kitchen to boil the vegetables I bought, and ended up with a luxurious dinner. The futons were clean, fluffy feather‑filled, and I slept well. Coffee and tea sets were also available, so there were no inconveniences. It was a very lovely travel memory. The only downside was that there was no bath—only a shower room—so I went to a nearby hot‑spring facility.

The book room was amazing, and my family and I could leisurely flip through books at our own pace. With that many books, the whole space was dusty, and staying one night made my nose and throat suffer. It wasn’t that the place wasn’t cleaned; it’s just unavoidable when you spend time surrounded by old books.
