“Made me appreciate other places”

I liked that I left. The room was dirty and unsanitary, the mattress was crooked and uncomfortable, and the taps or shower didn’t always have running water; when they did, the pressure was weak. People smoked inside, the smell lingered, and there was a lot of outside noise even with the windows closed.

The property is in a fantastic spot—Tube station, shops, pubs all within walking distance. The bathroom and bedroom were clean, and there was plenty of storage space. The room felt like a sauna in July because the air‑con didn’t work, and opening the window didn’t help; it was so hot we had to use our hairdryer on the cold setting as a fan. The slats under the bed on one side gave way in the middle of the night, tilting the bed all night—an easy fix if you check them regularly. There’s a fair amount of street noise at night, so light sleepers should be aware. Also, there are several stairs when you enter the property, so heavy bags can be a hassle. The room was small, but there was plenty of cupboard storage for luggage.

The cleaning was thorough, but after 19 nights I never got clean towels or bedding. The house smelled like mould and I could feel it in my lungs while sleeping. The shower head was loose from the wall, and when I mentioned it to housekeeping they tried to fix it with tape. A few guests smoked inside, even though the property is listed as non‑smoking, and no one seemed to enforce the rule. I had to contact the management to get a response; they promised to remind guests of the non‑smoking policy, but with people coming and going without supervision it was hard to control. As a solo female traveler it felt strange not knowing who might be right outside my door, even though there were individual locks on the doors. I think the experience would be different if you stayed in a group or with a partner. I didn't expect luxury, but I did expect more for the price.
