It was stale, smelled like cigarette smoke, and there were animal hairs—no good for allergy sufferers. We declined breakfast and instead ate with friends in Vimmerby.

It was cheap, but the house was rundown. We rented two rooms on the upper floor and felt uneasy staying there.
