“Lieve mensen, mooie natuur maar door achterstallig onderhoud wel minder mooi dan het had kunnen zijn”
The food was amazing—Angie and her husband turned every meal into a luxurious experience, clearly loving to cook and putting a lot of effort into it. With us as the only guests, it felt like an exclusive hotel. We came for the nature, and the spectacular views and the guides they arranged showed us far more than we could have found ourselves. Rubin and especially Robert took our stay to another level; Robert, Angie’s father, was the friendliest man we’ve ever met on a trip, and together with his wife Beck he even helped us get to our next accommodation, sharing wonderful stories and deep knowledge of the area. The village turned out to be safer and more interesting than expected, perfect for a leisurely stroll on a free day, and the resident dog added extra amusement. We stayed alone and perhaps a night too long; three nights would have been ideal to explore Crooked Tree’s nature and culture and to visit Lamanai, leaving the extra day rather dull. The lakeside scenery was unfortunately not at its best this time of year. There isn’t much else to do, so we filled the day with birdwatching and reading. At times it was hard to locate staff, giving the place a slightly deserted feel, and the upkeep around the main building showed signs of the high season being over. It didn’t bother us, but it was something we hadn’t anticipated.
