We arrived at a Disney‑themed guest house that felt unique for two middle‑aged New Zealanders, and over our two nights we were both delighted and overwhelmed by the hosts’ kindness, talent, and exceptional food; the other local guests were very welcoming and inclusive, making our stay heart‑warming and likely a highlight of our Japan trip. The house sits up a steep mountain road, surrounded by beautiful scenery and bird song, 3.6 km from Nikko train station and about a 2,000 yen taxi ride; the host kindly transported us to town because the steep hill made walking difficult.

The owners’ commitment and friendliness were evident, though some equipment felt a little dated.

Because there were no other guests, we could set our own pace for bathing and meals, and the staff guided us through enjoyable conversations that matched our rhythm. However, we couldn’t use the large communal bath, so we had to use the private bath in our room.
