“Disappointing stay – photos did not reflect the reality Unfortunately, our two-night stay at 52 Oak”
The air conditioning worked, but the stay was disappointing – the photos didn’t match reality. Our two‑night stay at 52 Oaks Guest House in Sasolburg was a very let‑down experience. From the moment we arrived, the property looked tired and in need of maintenance, giving a bad first impression. The biggest problem was the cleanliness and condition of the accommodation. Walking through the dining area and up the stairs to the penthouse suite, we encountered an extremely strong smell of old cigarette smoke that intensified the higher we went and was unpleasant throughout the stay. The penthouse itself didn’t meet the standard we’d expect from a guest house. The bedding felt stale, some pillowcases were almost see‑through, and I found hair in my bed; the bedding and pillows didn’t smell fresh. Stains were visible on the carpets next to the bed and in the bathroom, with marks that seemed to come from previous spills or dirt. The shower in the bathroom was dirty, had visible mould, and there were cobwebs and dust everywhere. The kettle was a major concern – I saw ants and cockroaches inside it before making coffee. There were no extra toilet rolls; we, four people, had only half a roll. The coffee and tea supplies weren’t replenished for the second morning, and the milk in the fridge had already expired. Overall, the experience was far below what we expected from the photos and description. The property has potential but urgently needs attention to basic cleanliness, maintenance, fresh bedding, bathroom hygiene, and general upkeep.
