Simmer Motel

I liked having a suite with a couch. Since the hotel was newly purchased, I’m not sure what their long‑term renovation plans are, but it would help to have a door between the living room and bedroom, a TV in the bedroom, and an outlet between the two beds for a clock or phone charger.

“I cannot recommend Simmer Motel.”

The spot is the best in Wamego, and Roberto, the maintenance guy, was awesome and very friendly. The remotes were missing batteries, but Roberto came to the rescue. The bathroom was missing towels and toilet paper, and the tub didn’t drain—Roberto fixed that on the first day. The bathroom was dirty, with hair and lint on the floor, a dirty sink and mirror, black mold a foot up from the bottom of the shower curtain, and moist black mold around the toilet side of the shower that wiped away when cleaned. A new shower curtain was offered at the front desk, but we didn’t have time to get it. The kitchen sink was a mess. Overall, the room was dirty. I love this place because it feels like “home week” when we stay; I grew up in Wamego and the Simmer Motel was always our go‑to, but after this stay I would reconsider. The mattress was very uncomfortable, and there was a lot of trash in the yard.

The place was very clean and the staff helped whenever there were issues. The bed wasn’t the most comfortable.

“Just NO”

I liked the size of the family suite, but the room smelled of stale cigarettes and musty carpet. The plush carpet was stained in various places and seemed unvacuumed, judging by the bugs—both alive and dead—around the walls. The stains might have been blood, poop, or chocolate—who knows. The loveseat had matching stains, so we covered it with bath towels. By that point we decided not to shower. The table was warped and the end table too small for the furniture. A giant spider web behind the dirty door was a real shocker. We did enjoy the OZ theme room, which had a flat‑screen TV on an old dresser but no remote. The bathroom floor hadn’t been swept and there was trash from the previous renter and dead bugs on the floor. The toilet was unclean and had a black mildew ring. The shower looked clean, but given the rest of the space, I wouldn’t bathe my dog there. The OZ theme decor was probably once nice but is now faded and peeling. The ceiling was unfinished. The beds were old and uncomfortable. The light had only one bulb. The shared nightstand fell apart when touched. Decor seemed like an afterthought, and the stained throw pillows really set it off. There were only two outlets in odd places and no TV or lamp in the bedroom. The curtains were lopsided and hanging on for dear life. The window unit AC kept the living room cold but the bedroom hot—no happy medium. Definitely one of the worst motel stays ever! We couldn’t get out fast enough.
