“Don't stay here.”
I had booked a cheap room, but nothing about it prepared me for the horror I encountered at the hotel. As we drove up, tall weeds and peeling paint greeted us. At check‑in we were told we had a non‑smoking room, which is what we reserved. The moment we opened the door, the smell of smoke was overwhelming – it felt like someone had smoked a pack a day there. I asked the front desk for a different room because of the smoke, and the clerk insisted it was a non‑smoking room. I repeated that the smell was strong, and she offered another room while she checked the odor. The new room smelled like sheep or a barn, again overpowering. Stains were visible on the bathroom ceiling. We immediately backed out of the room, repulsed. As we turned back, we saw the next door room had children’s bicycles and trash left out for a long time. We also noticed a hole in the hotel sign. We returned to the front office and saw the clerk angrily speaking into a phone, then walking back to the desk; she had just come from checking the first non‑smoking room. When she saw me return, she glared and ducked into the employee entrance. A shuffle followed, and a male clerk came to the desk. I explained that the new room smelled like a barn. A woman loitering nearby interrupted, saying she’d lived here for six years and had never smelled a barn smell. I expressed my surprise at the odor before addressing the clerk again. We told her we were going to leave and find another place. The man said he had refunded our money, and we found another hotel. Two days later, the refund had still not appeared.
