I’m on the 88 Temple Pilgrimage in Shikoku and was surprised to find that two of the temples were only a 15‑minute walk away. The building looks old and has a musty smell from being right by the ocean, and a two‑inch cockroach showed up in the middle of the night.

When I checked in, the front desk didn’t have my reservation details, so we spent a while sorting it out. Then the TV wouldn’t turn on because the outlet it was plugged into had no power; I had to move the plug to a neighboring socket to get the picture.

I was really impressed with the Chinese food at this hotel, it was top-notch. The staff were also incredibly kind and welcoming. However, the hotel itself was a different story - the maintenance was pretty poor, with broken lighting and furniture everywhere. It was like they'd given up on trying to keep the place tidy.

The front desk had a really strong, unpleasant smell, and the bathroom was dirty. It was a bit of a letdown for a hotel.
