“Amazing hostel in an amazing town”
I felt right at home the moment I arrived. There’s a WhatsApp group for guests to organize hikes and other activities, plus a guidebook with all the essential town info and what to do. Because of the big earthquake, I slept in both a private room and the dorm; both were clean and very comfortable. The back garden is probably the highlight, featuring a small herb garden, comfy sunbeds (some of us even slept on them for a camping vibe!), and plenty of wildlife. We had a sloth visit for a day, and there were hummingbirds, frogs, toads, and other birds. The hostel sits in the town center, everything is within walking distance. Breakfast is amazing—better than some hotels—cooked fresh, generous portions, and something new each day. All staff are super nice, helpful, and basically all speak English. My stay overlapped with the big earthquake, but the staff ensured we felt safe (even though they were worried themselves), and they still made breakfast even with no electricity for days. They immediately started checking for cracks and other damage, and offered me another room for safety reasons. Overall, I wouldn’t stay anywhere else in El Valle, and I can’t wait to return one day! Huge hugs for everyone at the Bodhi hostel!
The inconveniences were all linked to the earthquake. It would be nice to have private bathrooms, or at least a sink in the private rooms considering the price, but when you stay in a private room you only share the bathroom with another 3‑4 people, so it’s not terrible. At night in the dorm it was pretty cold with the AC running all night, but that’s typical for hostels. Having shower gel in the bathrooms would have been nice.
