“Worst hostel experience ever”

I booked this hostel at 10 pm after landing, only to arrive 10 minutes past 11 pm and be slapped with a €5 late fee. The receptionist was hostile, and when the owner came over he tried to intimidate me. We called the police, but they never showed up, so by 2:30 am I was out the door. I've stayed in 125 countries and never seen such bad treatment. Avoid it.

The volunteers are genuinely friendly and there's a cute cat that makes the place feel cozy. But everything else is a mess—old, grubby, and in need of repair. The family upstairs is loud, kids jump, and the thin ceiling means you hear everything. I couldn't sleep on either night, and one of my roommates turned out to be a drug user who kept dropping stuff and snorting. The staff don't seem to screen guests, and the building is only superficially cleaned.

The staff were lovely, and getting into the city was a breeze with public transport. There's a nice patio and balcony, and the facilities are great. My private room was tucked out back, quiet and comfortable.
