“Lovely room……nauseating smell”
We stayed here for three nights recently and had a mixed experience. On arrival, the unit itself was lovely – really spacious, nicely presented, and very clean. No issues at all with the general standard of the room, which made what followed even more disappointing. From the first day, we noticed a slight musty smell in the bathroom. By that evening it had become a very strong ammonia/sewerage smell, and by the next morning it was extremely unpleasant – to the point we were dry retching and couldn’t even use the bathroom properly. We raised it with housekeeping when we went out, and were told it would be sorted. Unfortunately when we returned later that day, the smell was even worse. We weren’t able to get hold of anyone, so ended up putting a wet cloth over what appeared to be a floor drain just to make it bearable. The following day we raised it again, and later spoke to who we believe was the manager, who was apologetic and said he’d arrange for it to be fixed. A staff member came in and sprayed something into the drain and advised it was sorted, but the smell returned within an hour and was worse again that evening. We had to run the extractor fan constantly (which was very noisy) and even then the smell was coming through into the bedroom. It made it very hard to relax or sleep and left us both feeling quite nauseous. On our final morning, we contacted the manager again and asked if he could come and smell it himself, but he wasn’t on site. At that point we were offered a room change, but as we were already checking out that day it wasn’t particularly helpful. What was most disappointing was that we weren’t offered an alternative room earlier, given how severe the issue was. In hindsight we probably should have pushed harder, but you do expect something like that to be taken seriously without needing to escalate it repeatedly. It’s a shame, because aside from this issue the unit itself was great. However, the sewerage smell was so strong and persistent that it completely impacted our whole experience.
