“A very bad experience. Don’t use booking.com”

I have nothing positive to say. I booked months ahead and informed the hotel that I would arrive between 9 and 10 pm. They assured me it was fine. Two days before arrival, my card was charged even though I had chosen to pay at check‑in. When I got there, the office was closed and no one was available. I called and only reached voicemail. About 10 minutes later, a call returned saying they were overbooked and had no room for me. I was stranded in Alturus at 10 pm. I tried other local hotels, all were booked, and a few told me I wasn’t the only one in this situation. I ended up finding a place an hour in the wrong direction. I would not recommend this hotel or the booking site. This is the second time I’ve had an issue with this site—don’t trust it, stay away, use a different site.

“Overall, very comfortable, just needs a little more attention to cleaning the bathroom shower.”

The free breakfast from Valero was good. The beds are comfortable and the staff is very nice. I also like that the room has a microwave and a refrigerator, and that it’s pet‑friendly. However, there was a lot of dark hair on the shower drain that I had to clean before showering. No hand soap was available. The TV and internet didn’t work, so we couldn’t watch TV during our two‑night stay.

I’m not usually one to write reviews, but my experience at the Modoc Inn was bad enough that I feel compelled to warn others. I went to Alturas for a wedding and booked a room for myself, my partner, and our 2‑year‑old child. When I arrived to check in, no one was at the front desk. Another guest was also waiting and said she’d already called the front desk seven times without a response. She called again while I was there, and it went to voicemail. I tried calling several times myself with no luck. After about 10 minutes, the other guest finally received a text saying someone would be there soon. A few minutes later, an employee arrived. Communication was very difficult because she spoke very little English and seemed confused about my reservation. She initially gave me the wrong room key and then asked me to use my phone to call someone. Eventually, I got the correct key and could get into the room. Before even getting to the room, the overall condition of the property was concerning. It looked like some people might have been living in several of the motel rooms full‑time. There was trash, clutter, and personal belongings scattered outside multiple rooms. Some windows were open, letting you see inside as you walked by, and several of those rooms were also filled with junk and garbage. It gave the property a neglected and unkempt appearance. Unfortunately, things only got worse once I entered my room. The floors throughout the room were covered in dirt. When I checked the bathroom, there was black hair everywhere—on the towels, in the bathtub, on the toilet seat, and clogging the bathtub drain. The bathroom floors were filthy, and there were stains on the walls that looked like urine. I then checked the bed and found stains on the sheets along with more black hair. I immediately went back to the front desk, but again, nobody was there.

“It was just okay for a one night stop.”

The place was in bad shape overall and the staff weren't around when I needed them; not their fault, but there was no WiFi.
