The service was quite comprehensive. I didn’t book directly, but I would have liked the ryokan to issue the receipt.

The staff were cheerful, the sauna made me sweat quickly, the welcome pancakes felt indulgent, drinks were unlimited, and both the pudding and other hotel services left me satisfied.

First of all, you have to understand that this hotel isn’t aimed at a European clientele. The décor is refined, the baths work, kimonos are available, and the Japanese‑style gourmet meal is good, but that’s it. When you book, the photos don’t match the room; I almost had to be disrespectful to prove my reservation with a photo. The rooms are basic and from another era, but that’s the hotel’s concept. Personally, I won’t return if I ever participate in Utah Kaga again.

Service was exceptional. We loved that this is a very local ryokan with traditional geika performances that let us experience the deep culture of this onsen town. We also loved that the staff is extremely accommodating. When we arrived, we were first informed that we couldn’t choose teppanyaki for our second‑night dinner because it was fully booked. We had kids with us, so we were left extremely disappointed… but not for long! The staff accommodated us by extending the opening hours of their teppanyaki kitchen, so the kids got to experience the magic! Kaiseki and breakfast were amazing as well! I love the detail they put into the presentation and preparation. The location is a bit far from the main town, it’s not a comfortable walk in your geta, especially for the taller ones. If you enjoy walking, wear comfortable athletic shoes. There’s also the option to walk from town to the ryokan along the gorge—please wear proper shoes.
