A beautiful lodge on a stunning location. The staff, rooms and facilities make the stay a delightful experience. If you want to be picky, you could say that the dinner on the second night was too similar to the first.

“Everything wonderful except the food.”

The property is beautiful and the setting is breathtaking. The private beach is wonderful and the walks are great. We stayed in the Churchill suite, which was spacious and extremely comfortable. The antique bath was fabulous. The welcome was great and the staff were very professional and friendly. The only dining option for dinner was the six‑course tasting menu costing £135 per head. The mussels course was so salty it was inedible, and the pasta was chewy and too thick. Portions were tiny and we went to bed still hungry. The wine flight was £90 per head for five small glasses, just over half a bottle. The menu didn’t state the volume of wine served, and the portions were too small to fully enjoy with the food. The pairings were very good, though. We were charged £45 for our hypoallergenic, non‑shedding small Bedlington Terrier to stay one night. He was not allowed anywhere inside the hotel except our room, and nothing was provided for him such as food bowls, poo bags or treats. I would not consider this hotel pet friendly. Unfortunately, breakfast was not great either. My kedgeree was well made but the poached egg on top had no runny yolk. My toast order was initially forgotten, and when it did arrive there was only one small slice of toasted bread and two small fingers of focaccia. My husband’s porridge arrived with no option to stir it in; previous hotels offered honey, prunes, compote, etc. We raised all of our concerns with Management on site, and some cash concessions were offered, but we still left very disappointed. Such a shame.

Knockinaam lodge sits in a remote cove with its own private beach, and the décor gives off a warm, lovely vibe. The rooms are very comfortable. I wasn’t happy with the mandatory tasting menu each night—no options or alternatives, the portions were tiny, and some dishes were overly salty. The set menu made the stay expensive, and an à la carte option would have been preferable. The wine flight at €90 per head was also a poor value.
