“Passable but not great”

The bed was comfortable, but the room was small and there was no electric kettle; to use one I had to go to the common kitchen each time. The bathroom had no glass door or hanging curtain, so water spilled everywhere while showering; the owner had put a cloth curtain that was meant to be hung on the wall to stop some water from going outside the cubicle. Check‑in was at 3 PM and the owner refused an early check‑in request, saying he doesn’t live on the premises and is very busy, so he can’t come before the official time. When I arrived at 3 PM there was no one inside to open the door; the owner called me and said his son would be there in 10 minutes, so I waited on the road with my luggage for half an hour, feeling very unsafe and at risk of being mugged, until the guy finally came to let me in. It was a worst and disgusting experience at check‑in.

I usually avoid public reviews because people take feedback personally, but this stay deserves a fair and balanced review. The property was very safe, peaceful, and quiet, and the pictures actually undersell it. I stayed there twice while in South Africa, first for three days and then again because the first stay was good. I was the only guest both times, which made the environment especially calm and relaxing. CCTV around the property added extra security and peace of mind. I also want to credit the host, who seemed genuinely prepared to accommodate guests professionally. When the neighbourhood’s water supply was interrupted, I contacted him and the backup system was switched on almost immediately, restoring normalcy quickly. My first stay was excellent overall, but a few things the host may need to address for future guests: the Sunday checkout time. Both bookings listed an 11:00 checkout, yet the host said Sunday checkout is actually 09:00 because of church commitments. The first time, he told me on the morning of checkout while I was already preparing to leave. The second time, I planned around the 11:00 checkout stated and forgot the verbal discussion from the first stay, so the same issue happened again. I raised this with the host directly because I think it’s important for the listing and practical arrangements to align clearly to avoid confusion. During my second stay I was placed in the Silver Room instead of the Golden Room. I didn’t enjoy the second room as much; the layout felt enclosed because the bed was positioned tightly in a corner without a headboard, making the room feel less comfortable. The room also lacked some conveniences of the first room, such as a freezer, and the charging plugs were far from the bed. In my opinion, the first room offered significantly better comfort and overall value for money compared to the second one.
