“Great stay”

The place is big and well equipped, with 6 beds that comfortably fit a sizable hiking group, and the location is great. The front door sign says “small cabin,” which clashes with the “front lodge cabin” name; I had to try the key lock PIN on a few empty cabins before figuring it out. The air conditioning keeps cycling on and off, and when it’s on it’s a bit noisy, which annoyed one of us. Other than that, everything was fine.

The “lodge” is very spacious but also very rustic; being half a mile from the park entrance is a bonus. It has all the essentials—heating, shower, a well‑equipped kitchen—and everything is clean: the bathroom, floors, and beds. It’s suitable for a larger group of climbers or mountaineers but not so much for a couple or family seeking a nice mountain retreat. Each of the two bedrooms sleeps 5 people, there are no bedside tables or lamps, and there’s a huge dining and lounge area that feels cozy only with a larger group. It definitely needs some upgrading and renovation. The hot tap water smells like rotten eggs, which is probably due to the nearby volcano; it’s harmless, but be prepared and bring your own drinking water.

My climbing team of 6 stayed here the night before our climb. There was plenty of space to spread out and sort our gear, and the fire pit was wonderful.
