Music City Hotel - The San Francisco Music Experience

The décor really stood out, but one of the night receptionists bombarded me with 21 questions about whether I was staying after I checked in by card, which was obvious and made me feel like a suspect.

“Stylish but not what one would expect in a hostel.”

The music concept was intriguing and the rooms were stylish and clean, yet as a hostel it missed the vibe that makes a hostel feel like a cozy, temporary community. The common area was just a small room with a TV that shut down at night, and the coffee cups were on the floor above, so guests rarely interacted. There was a restaurant kitchen on site, but it wasn’t open to guests, so no shared cooking or dining experience. I told the manager on day one that the bathroom light didn’t work, but it stayed out of order for my whole stay. The music side of the place is great and reflects the owner’s vision for a music space in SF, but the hostel feels like an afterthought that doesn’t foster a music community. Many guests are techies or tourists, but if they built a stronger community vibe, it could become a real destination for musicians working on projects. It’s a missed opportunity.

“Decent, safe, comfortable beds with a very, very nice ambience”

The beds were very comfortable, the blankets and pillows were nice, and the overall vibe of the hostel was great. Some staff and housekeeping were very friendly and helpful; I asked for an iron and they gave it, and when I needed to check out a few minutes late they reassured me it was fine. I didn’t stay long enough to say more. The bathrooms were cramped and the showers weren’t great, but that’s acceptable if you’re only staying a few days.
