“Tegenvaller”
The property is made up of separate two‑in‑one cottages tucked into a lovely garden where monkeys wander, which looks charming at first glance but suffers from poor upkeep and peeling paint, with gold curtains and a chilly lighting scheme that you either love or hate. The only redeeming feature was the air‑conditioning, although we switched it off because 16 °C felt a bit too cool compared with the outside temperature. A handy suggestion: the final resting place of King Kabalego near Hoima is worth a visit; Freddie gave us an engaging tour that cost about 20,000 Shilling with an additional 10,000 Shilling entry fee per person. The staff came across as indifferent and the whole atmosphere felt rather cold, lacking the warmth we’ve encountered elsewhere in Uganda, perhaps because we arrived in a tiny, battered car. The toilet initially wouldn’t flush, we had to hold the shower tap ourselves, and the pool sits outside the gate about a five‑minute walk away, requiring a guide, registration and the surrender of sandals for slippers. Both the dinner and breakfast buffets were disappointing, though the freshly made omelet was genuinely tasty.
