Ceylon Sungarden

I only spent a day and a night at Ceylon Sungarden, which was a real disappointment. The warm family served me the tastiest fruits straight from their garden during that brief visit. Dinner featured fresh tuna, and the entire house was spotless; the large, beautiful garden was perfect for relaxing. Leaving this wonderful place was truly hard, and I’ll definitely return.

The place was clean and the family was friendly, plus the Sri Lankan breakfast was nice. However, the location was terrible—situated between a very busy, noisy road that’s hard to cross, and a train track with a level crossing that rings an alarm bell and has trains passing. The beach shown in the photo is hard to reach via a dirt track and is very small. Our room lacked a glass window in the bathroom, so train noise wasn’t blocked; the bathroom needed work—a broken glass shelf, no soap, a shower that was hard to use and wasn’t explained until we complained, and a tiny towel. The room also had broken glass in the window and no mosquito net (the staff provided a pop‑up net after we mentioned the broken glass), and the air‑con unit’s electricals were hanging out of the wall (though it worked). There was no bin in the room or bathroom, no safe, and no water offered. We messaged to say we would leave a day early, but they claimed not to have received it and still charged us for both nights plus a breakfast that was supposed to be included. We left feeling taken for fools, which was very disappointing.

The garden was beautiful and the fruit growing on the trees was amazing—and delicious! The house was open and welcoming; Chaminda and his family were incredibly hospitable and had everything we needed on hand. They kept us well fed, cool, and always helped us navigate the coast, offering travel tips. Our room had an air‑con and fan that kept us cool and kept mosquitoes away. We had the chance to stay in many lovely spots around Sri Lanka, but we were so lucky to spend time at this place with such wonderful people. We can’t think of anything we didn’t like; it was a beautiful property in a great location.
