The hotel and rooms were great, though the stairs were a hassle when carrying large luggage. The bar was excellent, parking was plentiful, and the staff were friendly; I highly recommend it.

Merewood Country House Hotel, perched on Lake Windermere’s edge, dates to 1812 and preserves original Georgian charm. Set on 20 acres of manicured gardens, it offers free parking, Wi‑Fi, and en‑suite baths with bath and shower. Guests enjoy a regional restaurant featuring Cumberland sausage, trout, Cumbrian cheeses, and afternoon tea. A 6‑minute drive places it near Windermere’s aquarium, steamboat museum, and Beatrix Potter attractions.

The location, staff, and food were all good. The only downside was that breakfast could have been slightly cheaper, which is why we chose to eat out instead.

The breakfast was made to order and tasty. The hotel sits in a beautiful little park. However, we stayed in a small, dark room that smelled strongly of mold; even after ventilating through a tiny, barely opening window, our clothes smelled like a damp cellar after two days. The smell made us feel unwell. The photos look better than reality, and the hotel feels a bit dated. The bathroom was too small to turn around. Additionally, the hotel is very noisy: there was a loud wedding celebration with music in the house, and a vacuum cleaner started at 7 am in front of our door.

We celebrated our 5‑year wedding anniversary here; the breakfast was lovely and the staff were very accommodating. We asked in advance for flowers, and when we arrived they had them in the room with a card wishing us a happy anniversary. The room had a four‑poster bed, but one post blocked the TV; moving it to the other side would solve that issue.

The location near the lake was excellent, but the road at the bottom of the drive is a problem.
