“Here's Johnny!”
The location by a surfers beach at Praia do Gruincho, overlooking dunes and the Atlantic, was a treat. We had a large room with a comfortable bed. However, first impressions were mixed: upon arrival we were met by a surly hotel car‑park attendant who demanded we check in before granting access. The building, dating from the 60s, looked in need of serious TLC, especially the windows that were meant to offer sea views but were so dirty inside and out that we felt a constant sea mist. The bar area had a retro charm, as did other parts of the hotel. Bedrooms were basic but adequate, with minimal furniture—a hanging rail and a few hangers. The net curtains were torn and had come off in places; wallpaper was propped up in a corner by a chair. There were no extras beyond a TV, air‑con, a few bathroom basics, and old, soiled, torn towels. We stayed in a Dune View room with balcony that also required TLC and was quite grotty. While it may have once attracted celebrities (photos everywhere), the hotel remains but the stars have long since left.
