My partner and I spent a month in Indonesia, and picking beaches that met our criteria was surprisingly tough. We wanted no big tides—tides can pull the sea back several kilometers during daylight, and in August sunrise is around 5:30 am while sunset is about 6 pm—no currents, no surf waves, no crowds, and no dangerous wildlife. Pantai Sire fit almost all those needs, with a calm bay, fine white sand, forest behind, and only two resorts, Anema and Togu, so the place felt almost deserted. The staff, as usual in Indonesia, were genuinely friendly. We booked the cheapest room, a Junior Suite, which was basic but fine since we spent most of the day outside. Three things bothered me, though, and you should know them if you’re thinking of staying at Anema. First, the sea floor around Anema is covered in algae, making most of the bay unusable for swimming, especially in front of the hotel. You can walk about 500 m left of the hotel, just before the warungs, and find algae‑free water with a stunning view. Second, the hotel restaurant is low quality, even for breakfast, which they kindly gave us for free, and the prices are high for Indonesia. In other places with more options it wouldn’t matter, but at Pantai Sire it does. After our first night’s dinner at Anema, we ate the next four nights at Togu’s restaurant, which is noticeably better—especially the Indonesian food; the western and Japanese options are mediocre—and it’s very pretty. Third, Anema offers transport to nearby spots, but the rates are surprisingly steep for Indonesia—100,000 rupia per trip, even though Togu is only 1.5 km away—and they do the same for excursions. We used BlueBird taxis to get to Togu, which is less common for tourists, while Grab or Gojek don’t work in Lombok except in cities. The trip to Togu costs about 20,000 rupia. The downside is that taxis only run until around 8:30 pm.

The location, facilities, staff, everything was fantastic, the breakfast was incredible and very varied, just missing a small gym to be perfect.

The places and the reception were good, but it felt isolated.

The location is good and the breakfast is by request instead of a buffet. The junior suites are acceptable in size but not large.
