Carton House A Fairmont Managed hotel

We had a lovely stay in this beautiful family home. Every detail of the house was carefully looked after and everything was absolutely spotless. We appreciated how kind, patient, and understanding our host was with us and our two dachshunds. Traveling with two dogs isn’t always easy, and there were moments when we could tell that we were perhaps used to doing things differently with them, but he was incredibly patient and understanding, letting us handle things in the way we felt most comfortable and never making us feel anything other than completely welcome. We really appreciated that. The home was beautiful, full of character, and the host was genuinely warm and thoughtful. We would happily come back and couldn’t recommend it more.

Breakfast was a beautiful assortment of foods. Our stay lasted 7 days and there were 15 adults in our group. Every morning there was a 15‑minute wait for a cup of coffee and a 25‑minute wait for fresh toast. The restaurants were overpriced. Room service cost a bottle of water $7 plus $10 for room service. At one of the restaurants (Carriage House) we were sitting on the deck outside and asked for an ashtray. They could not find one and gave us a plate.

“Lovely from the outside but disappointing overall”

Dinner at Carriage House was very good and the service was great. I especially loved the seafood chowder—excellent! Guinness bread was fabulous. In the Carriage House the reception area could be better. Daily breakfast was very disappointing and truly the worst experience I have encountered. The staff were sour, the reception area was unwelcoming, and the a‑la‑carte menus were dirty. There was no explanation as to when you could order a la carte. Tea and coffee orders didn’t arrive each day and we had to request them a few times. Milk jugs were dirty and milk was seldom on the table. Sugar tubes had no prongs. The quality of food on the buffet was bad, the selection was not good at all, bread and pastries were dried out, and hot food was overcooked. In general the service through the hotel was not good, except for Carriage House and the gift shop—especially Sandra. We have stayed at Fairmont hotels and the standard of this one is definitely not up to scratch.

The staff were lovely, helpful and attentive; the property was beautiful, and dinner was delicious.
