Our party was okay, but the toilet, sink, and room were all dirty; the shower didn’t work properly, the hotel’s cold taps on the sink were the wrong way round, breakfast food was cold while the plates were red‑hot, and the bed and pillows were extremely uncomfortable—felt like camping.

The first room had a terrible smell—maybe a dog had been there—and we had paid £130 per night, asking for duvets instead of the old blankets, but that request was ignored so we switched rooms. The new room was tiny for £130, still smelled, and when we asked again for a duvet we didn’t get it until someone brought one later; we were there for a wake, and I wouldn’t stay there again.

The Livermead HouseHotel has an aged charm and a great bar and lounges, and I’d recommend those; the Wi‑Fi worked well even in our room, and a kettle and tea/coffee were provided. Most staff were kind and attentive. However, our room was tiny—we booked a small double, but that meant both bed and room were small, forcing us to sleep on our sides and preventing us from lying on our backs; the beds were squeaky and soft, so any movement woke the other person, and we both slept poorly for both nights. The shower room was cramped, so no one over my size could fit past the shower and sink to the toilet, and the water pressure was low. We didn’t have a view, but our window was above the bins, so we heard bottles being emptied occasionally. At breakfast there were far too many people— a coach tour, another group, and other guests—making it hard to serve hot food; we were rushed off our feet and had to wait 15 minutes for tea or coffee, then a long time for an over‑cooked breakfast with only one egg. It wasn’t value for money at £15.00 when I wasn’t getting bacon or sausage. One waitress was rude, shouting that I was in the wrong place even though a colleague had told me to sit there; she tried to move me to tour groups I wasn’t with, and after circling the breakfast room she finally let me sit back where I’d been. Her behaviour was unacceptable, though the wait staff could have handled drinks and extras better, as they do at the sister hotel. A breakfast buffet would have solved the problem. We stayed for two nights but chose to eat elsewhere the second morning. Things have changed a lot in the last five years.

The hotel was clean, really beautiful, and in a nice location.
