The food was okay, but I expected a slightly higher standard.

The downstairs decor was nice, but the long, dreary corridor and the 12 steps to the room were annoying. The staff were putting clean bedding on the carpet while pulling more out of cupboards. We arrived early for check‑in, yet 40 minutes after the scheduled time we finally got a room. The bathroom needs re‑grouting at the bottom of the shower and the floor needs work, which let the place feel down. I asked for scrambled eggs and a sausage, but received the smallest portion of eggs I’ve ever seen; I asked for more hot tea because it had gone cold while waiting for the food, and the guy added another tea bag to the small pot and topped it up, so it wasn’t hot but strong—yet I still had cold tea in the cup and he didn’t bring another. The service was poor. I had a very nice evening meal at another nearby hotel, thankfully. £7.50 for parking in their car park was steep, and I wouldn’t stay here again.

The hotel feels like a time capsule, but check‑in at 3 pm left our room only ready at 4 pm, so we waited an hour; they did offer a complimentary drink while we waited.

The historic building is stunning, and room 252 was fantastic; the staff were friendly, knowledgeable, and the bar served great light bites, though I didn’t try the restaurant; free on‑site parking is a perk in the heart of Ludlow, a beautiful historic town.
