Peacock's Paradise Safari Hostel

They turned us away at the door by a very grumpy man who accused us of being bad people. We had booked for a week and I think he didn’t like that because he books out to sell safari. This man owns all the cheap accommodations around the area and he is quite aggressive and rude. He upset my friend and me a lot. He offered us back a room and a safari for 3 nights at the same price of the room we had booked for 7. My friend and I reported him multiple times on the platform and got no result. When we refused his offer, he tried to cancel the booking ON MY PHONE to still get paid for the reservation he had aggressively denied us from! Stay away at all costs! Also, when we arrived, he started shouting at another group’s taxi driver for telling him the address was wrong. He is aggressive and my friend and I ended up going to a more expensive place that gave us safari at a fraction of the price he was quoting. Did not stay here! Do not recommend. Especially as a solo traveller… very scary vibes

The welcome, the pool, the option to eat there, the safari organization, and breakfast after the safari were all good. The only issue was that they asked us to lie about our 6‑year‑old grandson’s age to increase their margin.

I booked this place late in the afternoon and found the rooms clean and the common areas pleasant. The street is quiet, close to the main road, and the hosts were friendly. We had no issues with the accommodation itself, but almost all places in Udawalawe have very low rates because they expect guests to book a safari through them, which wasn’t clear when we booked. We only wanted one night and left early in the morning, canceling with the hosts in agreement and moving on to a more suitable place. Still, I’d recommend it for one or two nights if you’re planning a safari; we’ve been to Udawalawe many times and always spot elephants, and the pool is a nice touch. We’ll come back!

The only way to stay here is to book a safari or other tours directly through the property; if you book a safari independently, the hotel will ask you to cancel after the booking.
