The meals were absolutely amazing, and the level of care from the staff was even better.
The guesthouse feels just like a charming ryokan, with staff who are extremely attentive and professional. The traditional dinner and breakfast were carefully prepared and of high quality, and although the room was small—as we knew when we booked—it was cleverly laid out and well equipped. We enjoyed a wonderful sense of peace there, right at the foot of the trail that links Onomichi’s most beautiful temples.
“Sehr empfehlenswert mit Halbpension”
A tiny, elegant ryokan with flawless staff who are very helpful, and the dinner menu was outstanding.
“A big disappointment and inadequate quality for the price”
The staff, especially Oka who spoke excellent English and went out of her way to help us resolve the problems we had with our room, were always smiling and extremely pleasant. The rest of the staff also tried their best to help us since we did not speak Japanese. The price is not justifiable. The room was extremely small and adding a big reclining chair made it worse. The air conditioning was not working properly and the room was unbearably hot when we arrived. It took 24 hours for the room to reach a ‘normal’ temperature for an air conditioned room. The air con was very noisy. What was quite shocking was that one was obliged to walk through the hotel in thin socks provided by the hotel. Some people walked barefoot and others in socks in the public area. In order to get to the rooms one had to walk on carrier which is highly unhygienic. There were no indoor slippers provided. The kaiseki dinners and dinners were average. They used the same ingredients over and over again – sea bream and confer eels. Also very inflexible as one could not change any ingredients one is allergic to even when informing them in advance. There is no western breakfast, not even bread. I understand this is a Japanese style hotel but even in the most traditional ryokans, one is given the choice. Meals were churned out and some dishes tried to use western ingredients with a big failure. The location is good but the hotel is situated in front of a parking lot. Do not take room 204 in the summer. A big disappointment after having stayed in much more superior and elegant lodgings in Japan for less. Only saving grace is the staff hospitality.
“Sweet Ryokan with outstanding dining experience”
Onomichi Hansei is a lovely small Ryokan offering incredible kaiseki meals (dinner and breakfast) in a private setting. We had just finished riding the Shiminami Kaido and while we were tired, the luxury of being served many small courses while we comfortably lounged in our yukatas was bliss. The food was excellent, the service and staff were outstanding. The room was small but it was fine for our needs. nothing
