The Royal Sportsman Hotel, a 3-star, independently owned hotel in Porthmadog, boasts a 2 AA Rosette restaurant serving modern cuisine, and a gastro-bar with locally brewed cask ales. Located on the quieter end of Porthmadog High Street, it offers free WiFi, car parking, and easy access to the Ffestiniog and Welsh Highland Railway terminal and the Picture Postcard Walk.

We were treated well and the staff were friendly, but the floor in the room had a step and the shower cubicle grout had many colours.

The food was good, but the smoking area between the hotel and the garage was covered in bird droppings; a few minutes with a pressure washer would fix it. The first night’s dinner had only four tables in use, and the staff directed diners to distant corners of the room, which felt very anti‑social.
