The lodge’s location is awesome, just 5 minutes from the park gate; because Kidepo is lightly visited, you’ll drive half an hour to the next gate for registration and a guide, but that’s fine and you’ll see plenty of animals—elephants, zebras, buffalos. The lodge terrace offers a wonderful view of the savannah, and at night or morning you’ll often see animals drinking at the water pond right below the terrace; if you’re lucky, you’ll even spot elephants. The food is good and plentiful—almost too much. The staff may be a bit shy and reserved, but they’ll give you everything you want and try to meet every request. The loges themselves are spacious and clean; you might wish for a bit more flair in the furnishings, but you’re really remote, so you’re missing nothing. At night you can lie on the mini‑terrace and watch wild animals—buffalos, antelopes, sometimes other creatures—come by. I would wish for a ceiling or standing fan, or for the windows that can be opened to have sturdy fly‑screens so that cool night air can come in; the current openings let in too little fresh air. Compared to other national parks, Kidepo is pure relaxation, far fewer tourists, perhaps not as spectacular for seeing lions, leopards, or cheetahs—you need good luck—but you can drive an hour through the park past large herds and maybe meet another car. The landscape is classic savannah, and in the Narus valley you also have a river that always flows. Here we felt the wildlife more absorbed than inhaled… and the Zebra Safari Lodge is the optimal and very nice starting point.
