Arugam Bay

Arugam Bay is a single paved road running between a crescent bay and coastal jungle. Surfing drives the economy from April to October; the rest of the year brings quiet streets and monsoon rain. You move through town on foot or by tuk-tuk, trading high-end infrastructure for consistent waves and wild landscapes.

Arugam Bay trades on fresh seafood and eastern Sri Lankan flavors. Breakfast is roti and egg hoppers; lunch is rice and curry piled high on banana leaves. Dinner centers around grilled fish on Panama Road and late-night kottu roti.

Arugam Bay originated as a quiet fishing settlement near Pottuvil. Surfing travellers discovered its point breaks in the late 1960s. After decades of isolation during civil conflict and the devastation of the 2004 tsunami, local reconstruction turned the bay into a global surfing destination.

Arugam Bay has no train station or airport. You navigate the single main road on foot, by rented scooter, or by hiring local tuk-tuks.

• Scooters cost LKR 2,500–3,500 per day. Ensure your license carries a valid motorbike endorsement.

• Avoid driving scooters south toward Panama after 18:00 due to wild elephants crossing roads.

• Tuk-tuks feature roof racks fitted for surfboards at no extra charge within the bay area.

Prices peak between June and August. Cash is essential as card readers frequently lose network signal.

  Main Point breaks over shallow coral. Wear reef booties to protect against cuts and sea urchin spines.

• Friday prayer hours

  Pottuvil is predominantly Muslim. Shops and transport pause between 12:00 and 14:00 on Fridays.

• Strong ocean currents

  Rip currents exist near Main Point. Non-surfers should stick to the shallow waters at Baby Point.

• Wild animal safety

  Do not approach wild elephants near Elephant Rock or Panama. Keep a 50-metre distance in vehicles.
