Aveiro expanded in the Middle Ages as a thriving seaport and salt supplier. In 1575, a severe storm blocked the mouth of the Vouga River, forming a sandbar that closed the lagoon, ruined salt production, and caused economic collapse for over two centuries.In 1808, engineers opened an artificial channel known as the Barra Nova.
