A short history
Before paved access, the Esselen Tribe inhabited these canyons for thousands of years. Homesteaders arrived in the late 19th century, grazing cattle and logging redwoods in relative isolation. Construction on Highway 1 began in 1919 using convict labor and took eighteen years to carve through solid granite cliffs. Opening in 1937, the road connected isolated settlements to the state economy and attracted writers like Henry Miller and Jack Kerouac seeking quiet retreats.
