Bran

Bran is a narrow valley settlement built along a historic trade gap between Transylvania and Wallachia. Most visitors come for a single morning at the castle and leave by noon. Staying overnight lets you explore the quiet side valleys and climb into the Bucegi ridge.

Bran cuisine reflects high-altitude dairy farming traditions. Smoked fir-bark cheese (brânză în coajă de brad) is the local specialty, cured inside fir tree bark for a woodsy flavor. Bran sat on the historic border between the Principality of Transylvania and Wallachia. Teutonic Knights constructed an initial wood fortress in 1212 before Saxon merchants built the stone castle in 1377 to secure the pass against Ottoman raids.

Bran is a linear village stretched along the DN73 highway. You move around on foot inside the center, but reach neighboring valleys by car or local minibuses.
