A short history
Dehradun takes its name from the camp established by Guru Ram Rai in the Doon Valley in 1676. The British East India Company took control of the valley after the Anglo-Gorkha War of 1814-1816. Colonial administrators developed the town as an administrative and educational base. Post-independence, it became the capital of Uttarakhand state in 2000.
